On February 13, 2012, at the Rectorate of the University of Defence, the first session of the Quality Assurance Commission of the University of Defence was held, chaired by Col. Assistant Prof. Dr. Nikola Lekić. In addition to members of the Commission, the meeting was attended by members of the Rector’s collegium of the University of Defence, the Vice-Rector for Quality and Development Col. Prof. Dr. Jan Marček and the Vice-Rector for inter-university and international cooperation Col. Prof. Dr. Goran Dikić.

The agenda of this session included the following items: 1) Approval of the minutes of the Quality Assurance Commission constitutive session, 2) Adoption of the Quality Assurance Commission Work Plan in 2012, 3) Adoption of the Draft University of Defence Quality Assurance Strategy, and 4) Questions and suggestions.

After a brief discussion, the Quality Assurance Commission Work Plan in 2012 and the Draft University of Defence Quality Assurance Strategy were adopted. The Commission Work Plan specifies the activities for monitoring and controlling quality assurance standards and procedures at the University of Defence in accordance with the standards of the National Council for Higher Education. According to the adopted plan, the focus of the Quality Assurance Committee is on the self-evaluation of the University of Defence, on which it shall report annually to the University Senate.

The session adopted a proposal that higher education units should nominate members for the establishment of the self-evaluation Board, whose role would be to evaluate the quality of studies and pedagogical work of teachers at the University. The Board should submit the report on those activities to the Quality Assurance Commission, which gives its opinion on the report, and then together with the report submits it to the University Senate for approval.

The Draft University of Defence Quality Assurance Strategy was also adopted at this meeting. The adopted Draft University of Defence Quality Assurance Strategy defines the basic priorities of higher military education in the area of quality assurance, as well as the manner of their implementation in all areas of work of the University and its academic units, with a tendency to constantly achieve, build and improve the quality culture. The Draft Quality Assurance Strategy will be sent to the University of Defence Council for approval.

The Vice-Rector for Quality and Development Col. Prof. Dr. Jan Marček stressed to the Commission the importance of adopting the Quality Assurance Strategy, which is the umbrella document for quality assurance at the University of Defence. He then pointed out that self-evaluation is one of the most important tasks of the University in the future. He also informed the members of the Commission that at the third session of the University Senate, four rules in the field of quality assurance were adopted, which are an important basis for work of the University of Defence Quality Assurance Commission.
