Senate of University of Defence Established

On 9th December 2011, a constitutive session of the Senate of the University of Defence was held in the Rectorate. It was chaired by Rector of the University of Defence Major General Dr Miodrag Jeftić. The Senate is the most important body of this institution of higher education and is responsible for academic appointments, approval of doctoral thesis, adoption of study programmes, scientific and research work, professional development in officers’ career at the University of Defence, as well as for many other important issues related to educational and research work at the University.
The Senate consists of 13 permanent members, including Rector General Prof Dr Miodrag Jeftić, Vice-Rector Colonel Prof Dr Jan Marček, Colonel Prof Dr Goran Dikić and Prof Dr Mirjana Životić Vanović, Chairman of the Scientific and Teaching Council of the Military Academy Prof Dr Mladen Vuruna and Dean of the Faculty of Medicine of the Military Medical Academy Prof Dr Miodrag Čolić, as well as four members from the Military Academy and three members from the Military Medical Academy elected by their Scientific and Teaching Council. The representatives of the Military Academy in this university body are: Colonel Prof Dr Boban Đorović, military servant Prof Dr Vlado Đurković, Colonel Prof Dr Zoran Krsmanović and Colonel Prof Dr Ilija Kajtez. The members of the Senate from the Military Medical Academy are: Colonel Prof Dr Nebojša Jokić, military servant Prof Dr Silva Dobrić and military servant Prof Dr Dragan Tavčiovski
In his opening address, Rector of the University of Defence Major General Prof Dr Miodrag Jeftić emphasized that the Senate of the University of Defence was a pillar of teaching and research processes at the University. During the meeting, Rector informed the members of the newly formed body on what had been achieved so far with respect to organization (renovation of the Rectorate building and moving into new premises) and normative issues (creation of the Statute and other documents and general acts of the University). In his speech, he especially focused on the phases of creation of the Statute of the University, stressing a very cooperative relation with the units of higher education which had enabled coordination in the process of its drafting. Eventually, having been verified by the organizational units of the Ministry of Defence and the Armed Forces of Serbia, and by authorized ministries of the Government of the Republic of Serbia, the Statute was approved by the Government of the Republic of Serbia on 27th October 2011. Rector highlighted the number of study programmes being carried out at the University and the number of cadets studying them. He also pointed out that another act important for functioning of the secondary and tertiary levels of military education, i.e. Law on education in the defence system, was to be drafted.
The Chairman of the Scientific and Teaching Council of the Military Academy, Brigadier General Prof Dr Mladen Vuruna, stressed the significance of the session, pointing to the fact that for the first time the officials of the Military Academy and the Military Medical Academy were working together on development of higher education in the Armed Forces. Speaking about new challenges in the field, he informed that the study programme of Command and Staff Course had been submitted for accreditation, and that 10 civilians already attended the study programme of Defence Logistics. He concluded that greater attention must be devoted to development of military sciences.
Dean of the Faculty of Medicine of the Military Medical Academy stressed that the membership of the Senate of the University of Defence is a great honour and significant commitment. As for study programmes in the field of medical sciences, he pointed out that dentists had been working on developing academic specialist studies. He also said that the Draft of the Statute of the Medical Faculty of the Military Medical Academy would be completed by the end of 2011 so that the University Council could study and approve this important normative act.
At this session, Rules of Procedures of the Senate of the University of Defence and the Session Schedule for this body were adopted. It was agreed that regular sessions of the Senate would be held every first Thursday in a month and would start at 1200 hrs.
During the meeting, Rector of the University Major General Prof Dr Miodrag Jeftić informed the members of the Senate on the on-going activities pointing that agreements on cooperation had been signed between the University of Defence and the Universities of Belgrade, Kragujevac, Novi Pazar and Banja Luka, and that such agreements were to be signed with the Universities of Novi Sad and Niš and the University of Defence of the Czech Republic. He also advised the members of the Senate that formation of the University Council, Student Parliament and Quality Assurance Committee had reached the final phase. Rector also appointed members of the University Professional Councils, as proposed by the Scientific and Teaching Councils of the units of higher education, and their chairpersons.
In his discussion, General Secretary of the University Colonel Slobodan Kisić reminded the representatives of the units of higher education that, in accordance with the decision of the Government of Serbia, the units should harmonize their acts with general acts of the University by 18th January 2012.
